High ceilings, massive masonry and rooms that are often used only occasionally make churches particularly complex and energy-intensive to heat with conventional heating systems. At the same time, any visible alteration to the building fabric is usually prohibited in listed or historic buildings. Infrared heat solves both problems at once: It specifically heats people and surfaces instead of the entire room air, provides noticeable warmth within just a few minutes and can be discreetly integrated into the existing architecture.
Why infrared heat is ideal for churches
Because the heat is generated directly where it is needed, neither the entire nave nor the air beneath the high vaulted ceiling needs to be heated. This saves energy, especially in rooms used only occasionally, such as during a church service. The systems operate without moving parts and without significant air circulation, so they do not stir up additional dust - an important aspect for historic furnishings and sensitive surfaces. Dimmers and thermostats also allow the heating output to be flexibly adapted to service times and occupancy.
Discreet heat directly at the pew: ECOSUN CH pew heating
Our ECOSUN CH pew heating is particularly suitable for providing warmth where the congregation sits. It is discreetly mounted beneath the seat of the pew and is therefore almost invisible, a key advantage in rooms where visible radiators would detract from the historic appearance. An integrated protective grille prevents direct contact with the heating element, while the matt black powder coating (RAL9005) blends discreetly into dark church wood. The range is available in three power levels and can therefore be matched to different pew lengths.

All variants are designed for indoor use (IP20) and require connection by a qualified electrician as well as, in accordance with EU Ecodesign Directive 2015/1188, an external thermostat with day-of-week control.
Evenly heating large spaces: TEL Forza Triple Carbon
For the nave itself or other large, high-ceilinged rooms, we recommend our TEL Forza Triple Carbon with 7.5 kW. The medium-wave carbon heating elements glow significantly less brightly than short-wave heaters and distribute their heat more evenly and noticeably more gently, an advantage in rooms where the intense glow of a heater might be perceived as distracting. Mounted on a wall or ceiling, or suspended from chains, a single heater covers an area of approximately 40 to 80 m², depending on the mounting height of between 4 and 10 metres, making it suitable for large church naves as well.
Tailored control
Suitable wireless dimmers and remote controls with 4 or 42 channels are available for the TEL Forza Triple Carbon. They allow the heating output to be adjusted continuously and individual areas to be controlled independently. In accordance with the Ecodesign Directive, the ECOSUN CH pew heating requires an external thermostat with day-of-week control.
