Planning recommendation for optimal hall lighting
Reference values for sizing
Basic rule: The required number of high-bay lights depends on the hall height, desired illuminance and room geometry.
Recommended illuminance levels according to DIN EN 12464-1
- Storage areas, traffic routes: 150-200 Lux
- Rough assembly work: 300 lux
- Standard installation, workshops: 500 lux
- Fine assembly, quality control: 750-1000 Lux
Example calculation for a 500 m² warehouse (target: 200 lux)
- Total required luminous flux: 500 m² × 200 lux = 100,000 lumens
- With 153W high-bay light: 100,000 lumens ÷ 24,278 lumens = approx. 5 units (including safety factor)
- With 200W high-bay light: 100,000 lumens ÷ 31,907 lumens = approx. 4 units (including safety factor)

Cost comparison & payback period
Example calculation for a 500 m² warehouse
Scenario: 5 high-bay lights, operated 8 hours daily, 250 working days/year, electricity price €0.30/kWh
200W LED high-bay light
- Power consumption: 5 × 200W = 1,000W = 1 kW
- Annual consumption: 1 kW × 8 hrs. × 250 days = 2,000 kWh
- Electricity costs/year: 2,000 kWh × €0.30 = €600
- Maintenance costs: Minimal (no lamp replacements for over 17 years)
Conventional 400W HQL (comparable brightness)
- Power consumption: 5 × 400W = 2,000W = 2 kW
- Annual consumption: 2 kW × 8 hrs. × 250 days = 4,000 kWh
- Electricity costs/year: 4,000 kWh × €0.30 = €1,200
- Maintenance costs: Approx. 5 lamp replacements at €50 = €250/year
- Total costs/year: €1,200 + €250 = €1,450
Annual savings with LED
- Electricity cost savings: €1,200 - €600 = €600/year
- Maintenance cost savings: €250/year
- Total savings: €850/year
- Payback period: Typically 2–4 years, depending on the purchase costs
Over 10 years of operation: Savings of approximately €8,500 with just 5 high-bay lights—correspondingly more for larger installations.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Which power option do I need?
153W high-bay light: Suitable for ceiling heights of up to approximately 6–8 meters and standard applications (warehouses, workshops, smaller production halls). Sufficient for illuminance levels of up to 300 lux.
200W high-bay light: Recommended for ceiling heights above 8 meters, large areas, or higher lighting requirements (precision assembly, quality control). Achieves illuminance levels of up to 500 lux and more.
Is the swiveling mounting bracket necessary?
The high-bay light can also be mounted directly without a swivel bracket. However, the bracket offers significantly more flexibility for positioning—especially recommended for:
- Sloped ceilings or trusses
- Targeted illumination of specific work areas
- Subsequent adjustment of the light direction
- Wall mounting instead of ceiling mounting
Can the high-bay light be used outdoors?
Yes, thanks to its IP65 protection rating, the high-bay light is suitable for covered outdoor areas (carports, loading zones, covered ramps). It is not suitable for completely unprotected outdoor areas directly exposed to the weather without a roof.
How long is the actual service life?
The stated 50,000 operating hours are realistic and correspond to:
- Approx. 17 years with 8 hours of daily operation
- Approx. 11 years with 12 hours of daily operation
- Approx. 8 years with 16 hours of daily operation
After this period, the LEDs still have approx. 70% of their original brightness—a complete failure is rare.
Are the high-bay lights dimmable?
These models are not dimmable.
Which color temperature is right?
Both models have neutral-white light (4000K and 4075K respectively)—ideal for work areas:
- Neutral white (4000K): Focus-enhancing, practical light for production and storage areas
- Good color rendering: Natural color representation for precise work
- Not too cold: More comfortable than cool-white variants (6000K+)
Can I install the high-bay lights myself?
The mechanical installation can be carried out by people with suitable DIY skills. However, the electrical connection (230V) must be carried out strictly by a qualified electrician—for safety reasons and to maintain the warranty.
LED high-bay lights are extremely reliable. Should a defect nevertheless occur, the statutory warranty applies. The permanently installed LEDs cannot be replaced individually—in the event of a defect, the entire light must be replaced.
Safety instructions
- Installation by a qualified electrician only: Connection to the 230V mains may only be carried out by qualified personnel
- Check that the power is off: Switch off the power supply before installation work and ensure that no voltage is present
- Do not touch while switched on: The housing may become warm during operation
- No modifications: Opening or modifying the light will void the warranty
- Observe the mounting load: Check the load-bearing capacity of the mounting points (weight approx. 2–3 kg per light)
- Ensure adequate ventilation: Do not obstruct heat dissipation with covers or insulating materials
- Observe the protection rating: Even with IP65, do not install in permanently wet environments (e.g., underwater)
